Problem

Patexia is looking for prior art relating to the dynamic, real-time monitoring of resource utilization in a distributed processing system, whereby the assignment of tasks/jobs to individual nodes, or prevention of such assignment, is based upon whether resource utilization on that node is above or below a certain threshold.  Monitored system resources may include CPU usage, network bandwidth usage, or disk I/O usage, but we are particularly interested in art where the monitored system resource is RAM (random access memory) usage.  Relevant art is ideally in the context of a system such as Hadoop, but is not limited just to such systems.

Submitted documents describing this system must be:

  • filed,  published, or disclosing the functioning of a system that was in public use or on sale before 2013-06-28

  • not on the known references list

This contest is for a prior art search for US Patent US 8,849,891 and US 9,325,593, with a focus on claims (1, 2, 3, and 4) and (1, 2, and 3), respectively.

Questions

#QuestionValue
1 Is the reference either a US patent filed, a foreign patent published, a non-patent document published, or a description of a system that was in public use or on sale before June 28, 2013? T/F
2 Does the reference describe or relate to a computer system or method for processing large volumes of jobs distributed across a cluster of servers made up of a master node (supervisor) and system nodes (performing sub-jobs) (e.g., the Hadoop system)? T/F
3 Is each system node configured to report to the master node, in substantially real-time, that system node’s utilization of system resources? 5
4 Is the master node configured to assign additional sub-jobs to a system node if that node’s utilization of at least one system resource (e.g., RAM) is below a threshold level? 30
5 Where the monitored system resource is RAM, does the additional sub-job require utilization of unused RAM on the node to which the sub-job is assigned? 20
6 Is the master node configured to prevent assignment of additional sub-jobs to a system node if that node’s utilization of its RAM is at or above a threshold value? 30
7 Does the system further contain a “management controller” that tracks jobs or resources, where each system node is configured to communicate to the management controller the number of available slots or containers for processing tasks on that system node? 10
8 Is the master node configured to assign additional sub-jobs to a system node based on determining that (1) the utilization of at least one system resource of that system node is below a threshold level; AND (2) that the number of available slots or containers on that system node is zero? 5

Prior Art Search

This is a Prior Art Search contest aimed at determining if a patent idea was known and publicly available before a patent was filed.

+5 bonus points will be awarded for non-patent literature and for foreign language references.

This contest will close on Sunday, October 9th, 2016 at 11:59 PM PT.
