Smart car is a new buzz word. Over the past few years, with the advent of electric cars and advanced telecommunications, we have seen revolutionary steps taken to change the traditional automotive industry.

This industry hasn't seen big technological jumps for several decades. Most changes were evolutionary rather than revolutionary. Experts attribute the revolution that is currently underway to one or several recent developments:

  1. Availability of low cost silicon based GPS chipsets
  2. Availability of low cost silicon based image sensors
  3. Advancements of telecommunications and Internet
  4. ...

The goal of this challenge is to predict the direction of automotive industry in the next decade, suggest the key obstacles on the way and technological advancements needed to get there.

With your response, please address the following:

  1. Where would the automotive industry and next generation smart cars be in a decade from today?
  2. What are the key obstacles on the way that we need to overcome?
  3. What technological advancements has to happen before your prediction become a reality?
