CONTEST

Problem

Over the past decade we have witnessed a big jump in innovation for cellular phones and birth of smartphones. Generation after generation, we have seen improvement on data transmission rates, faster processors, better displays and above all, third party apps developed by companies and individuals.

Are we approaching the saturation point and innovation plateau in this area. Google is secretly testing 5G using flying drones and we have heard the recent news about Ericsson and Apple settlement to develop 5G together.

The goal of this challenge is to propose the path for next generation smartphones and suggest the key obstacles (e.g., technological, economical, ...) to get there. We are interested in hearing revolutionary ideas not necessarily evolutionary improvements that we see one generation after another one.

With your response please address the following aspects:

  1. The next revolutionary milestone in smartphone
  2. The largest obstacle(s) that keeps us away from that milestone.
  3. Suggestions on how to remove those obstacles.
