"Quiet revolution" in television manufacturing: NXP

Can-type digital television tuners have long been the standard, despite overwhelming reliance on silicon-based electronics in other areas. But now that's changing, claims NXP semiconductors in a recent press release. “Silicon tuners have finally surpassed traditional can-type modules in this year’s line-up of new TV sets,” said Gerry Kaufhold, NPD DisplaySearch analyst. The release was also quick to note that "NXP’s silicon tuners can be found in 13 out of the top 15 brand TVs." Though the release comes from NXP themselves, it raises an excellent point about their market share in an important, albeit small, part of television manufacturing.
