Nokia Aiming at More Proft from Patent Licensing

Nokia Aiming at More Proft from Patent Licensing

Nokia has no plans to re-enter consumer markets for now, with its HERE mapping business focused on business clients, Mr. Suri said. “We have nothing else to say on whether we would come back to any other consumer product over time. I think really [we are] focused on brand licensing as a first opportunity,” he said. “HERE needs investments and Nokia has a decent balance sheet and investment capability to let HERE thrive,” Mr. Suri said. Nokia does see additional growth opportunities, particularly from exploiting its intellectual property. Having been active in the mobile industry for two decades, Nokia has one of the biggest patent portfolios in the industry and hopes to monetize it further in coming years. “We haven’t yet tapped the full potential of our patent portfolio,” Mr. Suri said at the company’s investor day. Nokia will continue to strike deals to license its patents and “won’t hesitate to resort to litigation” when needed, he said.
