Ruth DemuthHaha, big surprise, almost NO ONE likes them. I think it's a huge sign that something is wrong when almost none of the people who would be creating the kind of stuff that gets a software patent thinks they are a good idea!

Christi MillerI don't think this is the way to go. Patents can be good if they are awarded appropriately and it's fair to reward inventors for things they truly invent, even if it's software. If we went Stallman's way, developers who had legitimate inventions/patents would have little recourse to actually enforce them.

Christi MillerI definitely think it's an overreaction. You don't need to get rid of such patents entirely. It makes more sense just to make them harder to patent. The patent system can promote innovation, when it works right. The problem is a lot of 'bad' software patents with too broad of a reach.

Ruth DemuthWho knows. Banning software patents outright is a pretty intense move. I mean...maybe some of them are OK? Or maybe they could have shorter terms or something. I liked Richard Stallman's idea about limiting their effects
