Kyle HoellgerThanks Xi. Bessen and Muerer's work raises some interesting points and there is no denying that some companies act in bad faith when it comes to asserting poor quality patents. I think the discrepancy comes down to how you define the term "patent troll" when you consider that Boston University, as an academic institution, protects and enforces its IP, while not necessarily manufacturing any products. Once the name calling gets out of the way I think you get a clearer picture of how NPEs are affecting the economy.

Jon La BreaThis was on substantive grounds. Looks like either the board is tightening up or the petitioners are pushing the envelope or targeting patents that are not necessarily that weak. In this case they argued obviousness.
