CONTEST

Problem
Patexia would like to disseminate the innovation of using sympathetic neural activity to indicate diseased conditions of the heart which contribute to sudden cardiac death. Neural activity, particularly monitored in the stellate ganglia, can indicate increased likelihood of cardiac arrhythmia and myocardial ischemia.
In particular, practitioners of this invention will monitor stellate ganglia neural activity, preferably with an implantable device (for example a nanoelectrode array). Upon detecting increases in sympathetic neural discharges according to this innovation practitioners will administer treatment for an impending myocardial ischemia or other diseased condition of the heart. To enter this contest, find a source demonstrating existing uses of this novel means of predicting increased likelihood of cardiac diseases associated with elevated sympathetic neural discharges after February 28th, 2005.
The following questions will help clarify the contest and eligible submissions. To be eligible for full prize amount, users should answer “yes” to at least questions 1-4. Additional questions will be used to determine a contest winner amongst multiple entries.
Questions
- Is the referenced use documented after February 28th, 2005?
- Does it describe sensing cardiac arrhythmia, myocardial ischemia or congestive heart failure, or another diseased condition of the heart?
- Does it describe monitoring sympathetic neural discharges?
- Does it involve detecting an increase in neural activity related to a diseased condition of the heart?
- Does it describe an implantable device used for this detection?
- Is the implanted device a nanoelectrode sensor array?
- Does the device produce an output signal upon detecting this increase in neural activity?
- Is the increased neural activity monitored from either of the stellate ganglia?
- Is the increase in neural activity determined by a twofold increase in amplitude or frequency of the sensed values?
- Is the increase in neural activity determined by comparing monitored neural activity to normal neural activity of the patient?
- Does the described use involve administering therapy in response to the output signal? For example, administering pharmacological agents, cardiac pacing, cardioversion or defibrillation.
