Ananthi Ford Motor (NYSE:F)is offering its electric vehicle patents to competing automakers amid slumping gas prices that have made EVs less attractive to many consumers.

Its move is similar to what Tesla Motors (NASDAQ:TSLA) did in June 2014 when it made its portfolio of EV patents, estimated in the hundreds, openly available to rivals. Tesla founder and CEO Elon Musk said in a blog post at the time that "all our patents belong to you."

Ford Motor filed for more than 400 EV patents last year alone, more than 20% of the total 2,000 patents it applied for in 2014. In all, Ford has more than 650 EV patents and about 1,000 patents pending.

The company didn't specify what fee competing automakers would be charged for the patents.

It made it clear, though, that it's moving ahead with efforts to build electric vehicles. It will add about 200 EV engineers this year and move EV development to a newly dedicated facility, Ford Engineering Laboratories, which originally was home to Henry Ford's first laboratories.

Kevin Layden, director of Ford electrification programs, said: "The way to provide the best technology is through constant development and progress. By sharing our research with other companies, we will accelerate the growth of electrified vehicle technology and deliver even better products to customers."

EV sales in general have fallen short of goals not only because of price competitiveness of gas-powered engine cars, but also because of the relatively short distances many EVs can go between charges and the lack of charging stations nationally.

At least four automakers including Volkswagen (OTCPK:VLKAY), Ford, No. 3 global automaker General Motors (NYSE:GM) and Nissan Motor (OTCPK:NSANY) are expected to join Tesla in offering extended-range electric vehicles in the next two to three years, Reuters said.

Ford is developing a family of compact size EVs for introduction in 2018-'19 that could include plug-in hybrid and pure battery-powered EVs, the report said. That car could compete with GM's Chevy Volt.

Ford shares were down 0.2% to 15.28 in Thursday morning trading in the stock market today.

Ford stock has slumped recently. It formed a seven-month cup-with-handle base, dropping 27% in the process, and is working on the declining handle, trading below both its 50-day and 200-day lines.

Tesla was up 1.5%. General Motors rose 1.4% and Nissan slid 0.5%.
